Cambrian News Article:

11 year Old Schoolboy wins Photo Competition.

11 year old Noa Jac Hughes from Machynlleth has scooped 1st Prize in the Protect Glaslyn & Hafren Photo Competition.  Noa’s winning entry was taken at sunrise from the top of Foel Fadian near Glaslyn in Mid-Wales.  Noa’s mother, Cerys Williams, said “We climbed to the top of the hill early on a December morning and were rewarded with a beautiful sunrise “.

Noa was presented with his prize of a family weekend in a luxury shepherd’s hut with its own private lake by Mayor of Machynlleth, Cllr Jeremy Paige at a special reception in Caffi Ty Medi in Machynlleth on Tuesday 10 December.  In his speech, Cllr Paige praised the Protect Glaslyn & Hafren Group for creating such a positive event.  He said:  “While I must be neutral on the issue, this is such a dignified way of protesting and it is great that you have involved the community”

The 2nd prize was awarded to Cllr Rwth Hughes for her photo of the view from Glaslyn with her son and dog enjoying the evening light.  Cllr Hughes said “We have been to that spot every year with our son since he was 9 months old and taken a photo. It is such a beautiful, serene place which we love”.

Maya Bimson from Protect Glaslyn & Hafren said: “We have been amazed by the number of entries we had to the Competition and it was difficult to shortlist 24 photos for the exhibition.  Our thanks to the Wild Oak Café in Llanidloes and Caffi Ty Medi in Machynlleth for exhibiting the shortlisted photos and to all the members of the public who voted for their favourite.  We are also grateful to Mayor Jeremy for coming and presenting the prizes.  Noa’s is a superb photo of a place that is precious to so many and which is under threat from enormous 220m high turbines.  We know there is a need to transition away from fossil fuels but we believe the wholesale industrialisation of the Glaslyn & Hafren area is wrong.  That view, that serenity, that special place which is a unique habitat for so many threatened species could be lost forever”.

The exhibition continues at Caffi Ty Medi and there are also cards and a calendar of 12 of the photos, including the winning entries, on sale at Dyfi Wholefoods, Caffi Ty Medi and Ian Snow’s in Machynlleth, and Woosnam & Davies in Llanidloes.

Our campaign group “Protect Hafren and Glaslyn” was set up to stop Bute Energy’s proposal for 26 220m high turbines by the Hafren and Glaslyn uplands in Mid Wales, called Esgair Galed Energy Park.
