Wales Wind Farm Prevention Group for Glaslyn & Hafren, Mid Wales

WHO.

Our campaign group “Protect Hafren and Glaslyn” was set up in March 2024 in response to Bute Energy’s proposal for 26 220m high turbines in the Hafren and Glaslyn uplands in Mid Wales.  Bute Energy have called this Esgair Galed Energy Park.

We are local people, business owners, farmers, young people and old folk who live, work, and farm in the area and we are joined by many more across a much wider area who walk, cycle, birdwatch, picnic and enjoy the land proposed to be covered with wind turbines.

We have set up as a Non Profit Organisation to campaign against and defeat the proposal. All for local Wales wind farm prevention, there is a small Core Group which leads the campaign, and Sub-Groups looking into different elements of the proposal.

If you have any skills which you think may be of use to us – whether you are a wizard at washing up or fabulous at fundraising, please do get in touch at info@stopbute.energy

WHY.

We do believe there is a climate crisis and this needs addressing urgently but bull-dozing precious landscape, endangering wildlife, destroying lives and homes with irreversible effects on the environment is not the way to do it. This is simply the wrong development in the wrong location.

WHAT.

We’re protecting the following from devastation:

  • Precious landscape that can be observed from Cadir Idris and Eryri National Park (Snowdonia).

  • Development would be on boundary of two SSSI's.

  • Adjacent to Glaslyn National Nature Reserve.

  • Important habitat for around 100 species of bird (22 of which are on the Welsh Red List) and a wide variety of wonderful wildlife, such rare and biodiverse environment needs our protection.

  • Endangered Upland peat, which lock in 1000's of tonnes of CO2.

  • The Upland water retention would be greatly reduced by the destruction caused and the 1000's of tonnes of concrete forever embedded in these hills, increasing the risk of flooding downstream.

  • Sites of archaeological and historical interest (Roman fort, ancient mines and prehistoric mounds).

  • Glyndwr's Way (National Trail), the Cambrian Way and Cycle Route 8 would be overshadowed and dominated.

  • Industrialisation of one of the few remaining areas of wild land in Mid-Wales, which falls outside the pre-assessed areas for wind farms created by the Welsh Government in Policy 17.

  • The welfare of the residents of the communities of Dylife, Llwynygog and Staylittle, who would suffer years of major disruption and be forced to live within a industrialised landscape dominated by these Giant structures with the noise and visual pollution they bring.

  • Huge negative impact on tourism for the entire region, not just those in the adjacent communities, this area attracts walkers, hikers, horse riders, off road motor bikers and cyclists, as well as anglers, paragliders, naturalists and those interested in the many sites of historical , archaeological and cultural significance.

  • The whole area is classified as a Dark Skies site, where the lack of light pollution creates the perfect conditions for Astronomy.

  • Hydrology of area, including the effects on private water supply.
